KP Reader 1: Casting the Horoscope & Sub-Lord Secrets
Introduction to the Krishnamurti Padhdhati
Krishnamurti Padhdhati (popularly known as the KP System) is a revolutionary twentieth-century synthesis developed by the late luminary Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti (1908–1972). Frustrated by the contradictory predictions and ambiguities inherent in traditional whole-sign methods, Prof. Krishnamurti embarked on deep stellar research combining ancient Indian Nakshatra systems with Western unequal house division (Placidus System).
The KP system’s defining maxim is:
“The planet is the source of energy, the constellation (Nakshatra) lord indicates the nature of the result, and the Sub-Lord determines whether that result will be favorable or unfavorable.”
Core Pillars of the KP System
1. Placidus House Division (Unequal Cusps)
Traditional Vedic astrology treats each Rashi (30°) as an entire Bhava. KP adopts the astronomical Placidus House System (Semi-Arc method) adjusted with the precise KP Ayanamsha.
- Cusps are exact mathematical degrees.
- Houses can span across more than one sign, and signs can occasionally be intercepted within a single house.
2. The Sub-Lord Theory (Nakshatra Sub-division)
Each of the 27 Nakshatras spans 13° 20’. Prof. Krishnamurti divided each constellation into 9 unequal parts (“subs”) in the exact proportion of the Vimshottari Dasha year distribution:
| Sub-Lord | Vimshottari Span (Years) | Arc in Nakshatra (Deg : Min : Sec) |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 | 00° 46’ 40” |
| Venus | 20 | 02° 13’ 20” |
| Sun | 6 | 00° 40’ 00” |
| Moon | 10 | 01° 06’ 40” |
| Mars | 7 | 00° 46’ 40” |
| Rahu | 18 | 02° 00’ 00” |
| Jupiter | 16 | 01° 46’ 40” |
| Saturn | 19 | 02° 06’ 40” |
| Mercury | 17 | 01° 53’ 20” |
Through this mathematical subdivision, the Sub-Lord acts as the final arbiter for every house cusp and planetary position. For example, if the 7th cusp sub-lord signifies houses 2, 7, and 11, marriage is assured; if it signifies 1, 6, and 10, separation or denial is indicated.
3. The 4-Fold Significance Matrix
A planet gives results according to:
- Level 1: Planet in the constellation of an occupant of the house.
- Level 2: Planet occupying the house.
- Level 3: Planet in the constellation of the lord of the house.
- Level 4: The owner (lord) of the house itself.
4. Horary Astrology (Prashna) via Numbers 1 to 249
Prof. Krishnamurti created the famous KP Horary table consisting of 249 sub-divisions (later expanded to 2193 by followers). A seeker picks a seed number from 1 to 249 at the exact moment of contemplation, enabling precise verification without relying on birth-time discrepancies.
