Upadesha Sutras of Maharishi Jaimini (जैमिनिसूत्राणि)

Introduction & Astrological Heritage

The Jaimini Upadesha Sutras represent an esoteric and concise branch of Vedic astrological knowledge codified by Maharishi Jaimini, the illustrious disciple of Veda Vyasa. Written in cryptic Sanskrit aphorisms (sutras) using the Katapayadi numerical cipher (where Sanskrit consonants substitute for numbers to calculate periods and sign strengths), the Jaimini system serves as a peer and complement to the Parashari method.

Whereas Parashari primarily relies on Graha Drishti (planetary aspects) and Nakshatra-based dashas, Jaimini introduces Rashi Drishti (signs themselves aspecting other signs) and sign-based cyclic timing known as Chara Dasha.

Foundational Doctrines of Jaimini

1. The Chara Karaka System (7 or 8 Variable Significators)

Unlike fixed natural significators (Naisargika Karakas), Jaimini determines significators according to the descending order of planetary degrees within their respective signs (excluding Rahu & Ketu in the 7-Karaka scheme):

  1. Atmakaraka (AK): Planet with the highest degrees (0° to 30°). Represents the soul, inner self, supreme spiritual destiny, and life purpose.
  2. Amatyakaraka (AmK): Second highest degree. Represents ministers, mind, career, advisors, and executive intellect.
  3. Bhratrukaraka (BK): Third highest. Represents siblings, courage, guides, and gurus.
  4. Matrukaraka (MK): Fourth highest. Signifies mother, emotional bedrock, and domestic education.
  5. Putrakaraka (PK): Fifth highest. Signifies children, creative genius, and intelligence.
  6. Gnatikaraka (GK): Sixth highest. Signifies kinsmen, disputes, diseases, rivals, and hurdles.
  7. Darakaraka (DK): Lowest degree. Signifies spouse, partner, trade, and interpersonal contracts.

2. Karakamsa & Swamsha

The Navamsha sign occupied by the Atmakaraka is known as the Karakamsa.

  • When Karakamsa falls in Sagittarius or Pisces, inclination toward moksha and deep Vedanta prevails.
  • Benefics in the 12th from Karakamsa indicate emancipation of the soul.
  • Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa is considered the supreme indicator of liberation from the wheel of samsara.

3. Arudha Padas (Manifested Reality)

Jaimini distinguishes between the intrinsic nature of a house and its societal illusion or perception, termed the Arudha Pada.

  • Arudha Lagna (AL): The worldly image, reputation, and perceived personality of the native.
  • Upapada Lagna (UL): The manifest reality of marital life, in-laws, and long-term domestic partnerships.
  • Financial prosperity is analyzed by studying the relationship between the 11th from Arudha Lagna and the planets posited therein.

4. Rashi Drishti (Aspects by Sign)

In Jaimini astrology, signs cast aspects upon other signs:

  • Movable signs (Chara): Aspect all Fixed signs (Sthira) except the one adjacent to them.
  • Fixed signs (Sthira): Aspect all Movable signs (Chara) except the one adjacent to them.
  • Dual signs (Dwiswabhava): Aspect all other Dual signs.
